Enlarged Erie Canal "Yankee Hill" Lock No. 28
-- Fort Hunter, N.Y.

"Yankee Hill" Lock No. 28 was a lift-lock on the Enlarged Erie Canal, built in 1841, with a lift of 8 feet. The lock was enlarged (lengthened and deepened to nine feet) in 1885. It is located about two and one-half miles east of Schoharie Creek.
The lock includes a stone plaque, inscribed "LOCK No. 28 / Archt. C. Powell Rest. Engr. / William Coleman & Co. Contractors / 1841" (see the plaque to the right).
